What is BOCW?

BOCW stands for the Building and Other Construction Workers Act, 1996.

It is implemented through the Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board in every state.

​

The main aim is to protect construction workers and provide financial & social security benefits.

​

What is TN BOCW?

​

In Tamil Nadu, BOCW is implemented through the
Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board,
which comes under the Tamil Nadu Unorganised Workers Welfare Boards.

​

The purpose is to give financial security, insurance, pension, and family support to construction workers.

​

RENEWAL DETAILS (VERY IMPORTANT):

• Renewal required every year

• If not renewed → ALL benefits STOP

• Renewal is FREE in Tamil Nadu

• Same portal → Renewal option

• Needs updated mobile & bank details

If lapse exceeds long time → re-registration may be required

Who must comply?

• Builders

• Contractors

• Construction companies

• Individuals constructing houses above threshold limits

​

Key Obligations:

✔ Register establishment under BOCW
✔ Pay BOCW Cess = 1% of construction cost
✔ Maintain worker records
✔ Follow safety rules

​

Cess is NOT paid by workers
